  • The Malaghan Institute is New Zealand’s leading independent biomedical research charity, dedicated to breakthrough discoveries in immunology and immunotherapy. Its cutting-edge research and clinical trials deepen understanding of the immune system and its impact on human health. As a registered charity owned by New Zealand, the Institute is uniquely positioned to translate discoveries into therapies that prevent, treat, and cure disease, with the community as its largest stakeholder.

  • Malaghan sought a brand refresh that could visually convey energy, innovation, and wellbeing while reflecting its scientific expertise and heritage. The challenge was to create a visual identity that was dynamic and engaging, yet sophisticated and credible, highlighting the Institute’s impact in the biomedical research field.

  • We developed a supporting graphic device that communicates impact through movement and fluidity, combining organic dynamism with subtle scientific cues. A strong brand device, inspired by the Malaghan monogram, emphasizes the top-right curve to symbolize breakthrough research, and can be applied across collateral to focus attention on key messaging. The refreshed colour palette retains Malaghan’s signature red while introducing a richer shade, gradients, and complementary blues to balance innovation, trust, and warmth. Custom icons were designed to feel bespoke and sophisticated, unified by a dynamic circle mark that ties the visual system together.
